| February 4 - 7, 2010 | UCLA WRITING STUDIO Course Description: Your voice is the unique way in which you communicate with yourself and with others. It is your spoken and written fingerprint. Hundreds of factors shape your voice from the moment you are born. No one in the world has the same mix. No one in the world writes the way you do. This four-day, full immersion workshop will teach you how to release your own, distinct voice and make it emerge from your inner wealth of experience, authentic feelings, desires and fears. Through proven techniques, readings, in-class discussions, and writing exercises, you will allow yourself to write your novel, memoir, essay or poetry from that deep place within you where your best stories are created. STATEMENT: I've heard enough people tell me, "Everything's been written. Why bother?" I believe they are missing the point. Writing is not about making up new topics. Some of the best works today on the New Arrivals tables at bookstores deal with subjects as old as humankind: love, betrayal, war, politics, loss, and so on. What makes these timeless themes feel like new is voice, the writer's only weapon against sameness. There is only one Chandler, only one Faulkner, only one you. Whether they know it or not, all writers have a unique voice, and when used with freedom, confidence, honesty and courage, it can become a writer's greatest gift, the stuff readers crave to devour, what other writers long to steal, the very element publishers search for in every manuscript that lands on their desks. This is the reason I am thrilled to spend four intense days with you: I want to help you discover the power of your voice and be there when it happens. http://www2.uclaextension.edu/writers/ |

For more of María's workshops, visit https://www.uclaextension.edu/r/Default.aspx Syllabus: Just as every human being has a unique personality, every writer has--potentially--a unique voice through which his/her vision may be best expressed. Designed to help beginning and established writers discover/develop that voice, this workshop includes exercises to discover personal patterns of diction and imagery, dissolve blocks, recover lost memories, tap into the individual wellsprings of creativity, and explore personal mythologies. Participants also study selected writers to determine what constitutes a "style" and read student works in a supportive atmosphere. Through active and playful class participation, each student learns how to listen for his/her own writing voice and let it emerge.
